Outrage erupts as de Blasio declares NYC schools will close for Muslim holidays

In the interest of “diversity” — and to the disgust of critics — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday that New York City public schools will be closed for the Muslim holidays of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr.

This will add to the two Jewish and two Christian holidays currently on the New York City public school calendar, according to United Press International.

Those Christian holidays are Christmas and Easter. Christmas, however, is already a national holiday, so school would likely be closed for that day anyway. Easter, on the other hand, always falls on a Sunday, so school would be closed then, just like any other Sunday.

New York public schools also break for Passover and Rosh Hashanah to accommodate the city’s substantial Jewish population, which makes up between 10 and 30 percent of the total, depending on the borough, according to a 2008 Gotham Gazette report.

That same report listed the city’s Muslim population as comprising only 1.6 and 4.9 percent of the population, again, depending on the borough.

The mayor’s office, however, claims Muslims make up 10 percent of the city’s population overall, according to UPI, which reported.

Eid al-Adha is known as the Festival of the Sacrifice, in reference to the Abraham shared with Christianity and Judaism, who was willing to sacrifice his son to God. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of fasting for the holy month of Ramadan.

The mayor also announced his decision on Twitter:

But critics abounded.

Anti-Islamist author/blogger Pamela Geller’s announcement of de Blasio’s decision prompted disbelief:

One person wondered what Muslim holidays were being observed:
