A top official of the National Rifle Association on Wednesday accused the Obama administration of lying about its reasons for trying to ban a popular form of ammunition and vowed the gun rights group wouldn’t give any ground in defending the Second Amendment.
In a “Kelly File” interview, NRA Executive Director Chris Cox said the Obama administration’s proposed ban on a type of bullet commonly used in AR-15 rifles could open the door to an avalanche of gun control measures.
Obama’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms made it known in February that it intends to ban the ammo, known as “green tips,” because, the ATV claims, its armor-piercing qualities make it a threat to law enforcement.
But Cox called the plan a direct assault on the Constitution and another end-run around Congress to further the administration’s anti-gun agenda.
Gun rights activists believe this is a response by the administration to finish the job it couldn’t when it tried to ban the AR-15 in 2013. That attempt failed miserably, but the disdain for the Second Amendment still runs high in the White House.
“They say it isn’t about going after the AR-15 … the problem is that this particular type of ammunition can pierce the bullet proof vests that are worn by law enforcement,” Kelly said.
The only problem with that “reasoning” is that it’s never happened, according to Cox. Essentially, he said, the Obama administration has concocted a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.
“It’s interesting that they’re lying on this, there’s no national cop groups that’s calling for this ban. The head of the National Fraternal Order of Police said that this wasn’t necessary,” Cox said.
“The reason why it’s not necessary is that not one police officer has died as a result of a vest penetration from one of these rounds being fired…”
Under the administration’s framework for the ammo ban, Cox predicts this would be the first of many to come “because anything going fast enough will penetrate soft body armor,” he said.
Cox explained that every American should be concerned about how the president continues to undermine the Constitution with his phone and pen.
Cox said the NRA is working with both sides of aisle to halt this affront to freedom.
“This president hates guns,” Cox said. “He always has.”
“He doesn’t care for the Constitution, he says he’s got his cellphone and his pen and he’s gonna ignore it. Well, we can’t do much about his hatred, but we can do something about trying to dismantle the Second Amendment.”
“And the five million members of the National Rifle Association are going to fight this, every step of the way.”
