Dr. Ben Carson, the retired neurosurgeon and possible Republican presidential contender, stirred up a storm of controversy Wednesday when he told an interviewer being gay is a matter of choice — and learned a lesson about how he’ll deal with the media in the future.
“A lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight — and when they come out, they’re gay,” he said Wednesday morning to CNN’s Chris Cuomo. “So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.”
The quote caused a firestorm, and but by the day’s end Carson began backtracking.
“I do not pretend to know how every individual came to their sexual orientation,” Carson wrote on his Facebook page Wednesday afternoon. “I regret that my words to express that concept were hurtful and divisive. For that I apologize unreservedly to all that were offended.”
“I am not a politician and I answered a question without really thinking about it thoroughly. No excuses,” he added.
In a radio interview with Sean Hannity Wednesday evening, Carson said he’s through talking about gay issues with the liberal media. The questions are being used to derail his candidacy, he said, not to discuss actual policy.
“I simply have decided I’m not going to really talk about that issue anymore because every time I’m gaining momentum, the political press says, ‘Let’s talk about gay rights,'” he said. “And I’m just not going to fall for that anymore.”
