In the wake of a New York Times report that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton used a personal email account to conduct government business, U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, wants Clinton’s emails preserved for further investigation by his panel.
Gowdy said the committee was aware that Clinton used personal emails — a likely violation of federal rules — but was not aware of the extent of the practice, USA Today reported. He said he’s concerned about whether all emails related to 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, have been turned over
He said in a statement the State Department cannot confirm that they have produced all of Clinton emails because they “do not have them or control them.”
“The Department of State is relying on Secretary Clinton herself and her attorneys and advisors to tell us, to tell you, what emails they think are to be preserved,” Gowdy said.
“The State Department does not have all of the former Secretary’s emails on its servers, only she has the complete record,” he added. “And the committee is going to have to go to her, her lawyers and her email providers to ensure we have access to everything the American people are entitled to know.”
“You do not need a law degree to understand how troubling this is.”
According to USA Today, the committee has not ruled out issuing a subpoena to Internet service providers for Clinton emails related to Benghazi.
As expected, Democrats ran interference for Clinton, the likely 2016 Democratic presidential nominee.
U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., the ranking Democrat on the committee, said in a statement it has long been public knowledge that Clinton used personal email accounts and that previous secretaries of state have done the same, USA Today reported.
