There aren’t many tougher businesses than professional hockey, but on Monday one little girl softened the hearts of some National Hockey League GMs and helped push a trade to happen just before the league’s deadline.
Jordyn Leopold, 11, wrote a letter to the Minnesota Wild because she wanted her father, Jordan Leopold, to play for them. She never actually mailed the letter, but did post it on her Facebook page — where it went viral.
“My dad is very lonly (sic) without his family,” she wrote. “We are living in Minnesota right now and I am lost without my dad and so is my mom , my 2 sisters and my brother.”

“It has been since November and we cannot take it anymore,” she added before begging “please, please, please ask the (Columbus Blue) Jackets if you guys can get him.”
Shortly before the 3 p.m. trade deadline Monday, she got her wish. The Wild traded defenseman Justin Falk and a fifth-round pick to the Jackets for Leopold and brought her dad home.
Blue Jackets General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen posted a picture of the letter on Twitter after the trade and wrote, “It isn’t always just about business…”
“We wanted to do the right thing with Jordan Leopold. That’s what we had talked about the whole time. We knew that his family was in Minnesota and he was here alone. His family visited a few times,” Kekalainen said after the deal was completed.
“There is a human side, believe it or not, to our business,” he added. “I think it’s great that he can go home, join his family. To see that letter, it’s pretty touching.”
Minnesota Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher said the letter moved him too.
‘After I saw it, there was a pressure to close the deal, that’s for sure,” he said. “I’ve only spoken to Jordan once this afternoon, and he’s been away from his family for most of the year, and that’s hard and you’ve certainly got to feel for him, but I know he’s extremely excited to play for the Wild and to join our team. I think we’re going to have a very motivated player and a very excited family, so those are two very good things to have.”
