Before all the facts were confirmed, veteran CNN journalist Chris Cuomo fired off some tweets Monday morning implying police wrongdoing or negligence in the shooting of a homeless man that has been widely viewed in a viral Internet video.
“#LAPDShooting i say it comes down to facts, because it always doe:. what did cops suspect, why taze, taze effect, and if victim got gun???” the CNN anchor tweeted.

That tweet raised eyebrows and caused others to engage Cuomo is the propriety of his statements.
@ChrisCuomo Just do what your suppose to do and nobody gets hurt. #besmart

.@rex0901 @gardenflower191 resisting arrest is a death sentence? #LAPDShooting. facts and training, esp w/ mentally ill
— Chris Cuomo (@ChrisCuomo) March 2, 2015
That’s when your humble correspondent engaged with Mr. Cumo, and things got a little heated.
@ChrisCuomo @rex0901 @gardenflower191 Once upon a time reporters were unbiased and used facts.

@ChrisCuomo CMon Chris you are all but calling the cops guilty of a crime or negligence before we have any facts.
— Carmine Sabia (@CarmineSabia) March 2, 2015
@ChrisCuomo You have a powerful perch. You can unintentionally incite riots and / or violence with your words. Be responsible.
— Carmine Sabia (@CarmineSabia) March 2, 2015
@ChrisCuomo Said cops need better training / need to do what they are suppose to do – it insinuates wrongdoing. Again CMon CC you know.
— Carmine Sabia (@CarmineSabia) March 2, 2015
@ChrisCuomo Average person can say what they want. In your position words must be chosen carefully.
— Carmine Sabia (@CarmineSabia) March 2, 2015
@ChrisCuomo You say it comes down to facts. I agree. Lets wait. You aren’t. I wrote benign article on it blaming no one.
— Carmine Sabia (@CarmineSabia) March 2, 2015
@CarmineSabia you said I was all but blaming. I am not. You right to call for responsibility but also practice it
— Chris Cuomo (@ChrisCuomo) March 2, 2015
@CarmineSabia again, training with mental illness is an issue. Doesn’t mean this was unjustified by any stretch.
— Chris Cuomo (@ChrisCuomo) March 2, 2015
@CarmineSabia it could. U r right. I am highlighting training as an aspect for analysis, along with motions toward gun, etc.
— Chris Cuomo (@ChrisCuomo) March 2, 2015
“@CarmineSabia: @ChrisCuomo Tough to debate in 140 characters. Would love to talk.” No debate. U r right. Should err on side of caution.
— Chris Cuomo (@ChrisCuomo) March 2, 2015
Conservative pundit Dana Loesch also weighed in.
Someone explain to @ChrisCuomo that “gotchas” don’t apply to quoting his Tweets in screenshot. Lame defense.
— Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) March 2, 2015
Attn. Lamebrains: quoting your words is quoting YOU. Don’t know the difference? Then shut up.
— Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) March 2, 2015
Things get said in the heat of the moment when emotions are high. But reporters like Cuomo, who present themselves as journalists reporting the facts of a case, should be more careful.
In the end, Cuomo acknowledged the need to err on the side of caution until all the facts of a case are presented.
I respect that. Viewers should, too.
