U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert is passionate about his politics, and that passion took center stage on Friday during a floor speech he gave right before the House voted on a short-term funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security.
The Republican lawmaker from Texas unloaded on President Obama for his overreaching executive amnesty, of which, as Gohmert pointed out, the president “spoke” into law.
“This president didn’t even have the gumption to write an executive order and sign it,” Gohmert said. “He spoke his new amnesty law into being, and then [DHS Secretary] Jeh Johnson did a memo.”
“That took the power of Congress away from us,” Gohert said, his voice rising with emotion.
“So the question on acting responsibly is, do we make that message clear: we’re not having laws spoken into being in this country, and having some bureaucrat, unelected, come around with a memo that undoes laws by different Congresses all these years, signed by different presidents.”
“With a memo?! Come on!” he shouted.
As heartwarming as it may be for traditional Americans to see a lawmaker stand in defense of the U.S. Constitution and to preserve the balance of power that has served America for better than two centuries, fellow Republicans see such lawmakers as being part of the “delusional wing of the party.”
