Trey Gowdy personally enters the fight over Obama’s amnesty overreach

With the House mired in a battle over funding the Department of Homeland Security, a battle brought on by Republican lawmakers looking to defund President Obama’s overreaching executive amnesty, U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy introduced a bill that will accomplish the same goal.

The no-nonsense former prosecutor from South Carolina introduced his own bill Friday that will defund Obama’s unilateral actions on immigration and prevent future presidents from taking similar steps, The Daily Caller reported. The bill will also make it easier to remove criminal aliens from the United States.

The Republican lawmaker named the bill after Michael Davis, Jr., a California deputy sheriff killed in the line of duty last year by an illegal immigrant, according to The Daily Caller.

Gowdy, chairman of the House Immigration and Border Security Subcommittee, said in a statement that “both political parties bear responsibility” for the country’s broken immigration system.

“This legislation allows state and local governments to assist in the enforcement of our federal immigration laws,” Gowdy added.

“By doing so, we remove the ability of this or future presidents – of either party – to systematically shut down portions of the law to suit their political purposes.”

The bill would also strengthen the interior enforcement of immigration laws by allowing state and local governments to enforce federal immigration law.

“If we are serious about finding a long term solution to our immigration system, we must address interior enforcement,” Gowdy said in the statement.

“This bill, which is one part of the committee’s step-by-step process to address our broken immigration system, will ensure we do not repeat the mistakes of the past and help us earn back the trust of the American public.”
