‘No TelePrompTer?’ Scott Walker wows CPAC crowd: ‘We celebrate our independence’

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker wowed the Conservative Political Action Conference Thursday night by presenting the conservative principles that have helped change the direction of his state during his four years in office — principles that could be used to change the course of a floundering nation.

He appeared in what is becoming something of a trademark for him — coatless with shirtsleeves rolled up, ready to get to work.

“Up there in Washington, we have a president who measures success by how many people are dependent on the government,” Walker said at about the 6:40 mark.

“There’s a reason we celebrate the Fourth of July and not April 15, because in America we celebrate our independence from the government and not our dependence on it.”

That line was pure Ronald Reagan, who once quipped that Republicans live their lives like every day is the Fourth of July, while Democrats live theirs like every day is April 15.

Walker listed some of the reforms he’d initiated in Wisconsin, including expansion of Second Amendment rights, establishing a voter ID law and abolishing tenure for teachers.

When he noted that next week, his will become the 25th right-to-work state in the nation, he got loudly heckled (about the 12:40 mark) by a presumed union supporter in the crowd. That’s when Walker showed an ability to think on his feet.

“Apparently the protesters come from Wisconsin as well,” Walker shot back, without missing a beat. “But those voices can’t drown out the voices of the hardworking taxpayers.”

Walker met afterwards with Fox News host Sean Hannity to discuss how he was able to accomplish so much in a state that hadn’t voted for a Republican president in 30 years.

The speech drew rave reviews.
