House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer was caught on a hot mic late Thursday calling House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy a “coward.”
Ignoring President Obama’s admonition to “make sure that we are talking to each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds,” the second- ranking House Democratic leader lashed out at McCarthy during a battle over funding for the Homeland Security Department.
McCarthy had just outlined Friday’s schedule after earlier announcing plans for the Republican-led House to vote on a three-week funding bill for the agency, which is set to run out of money at midnight on Friday.
He yielded to Hoyer, who began whining about the GOP “leaving the Department of Homeland Security twisting in the wind,” drawing boos from the gallery.
McCarthy yielded back his time to say “we did our part” — Hoyer is then heard muttering: “You coward.”
The Maryland Democrat told CNN he was angry because his mic was cut off while he was still asking question, which lead to what one Twitter user called his “hissy fit.”
The two lawmakers are said to have a good relationship, and Hoyer did apologize afterwards.
“He’s not a coward. I just apologized to him,” Hoyer told CNN as he walked off the House floor. “I said something I shouldn’t have said.”
Social media users were quick to take note of Hoyer’s less than civil rhetoric. Here is a sampling of the responses as seen on Twitter:

Hoyer called McCarthy “a coward” on House floor. So, they’re working together…?

Wow…Steny Hoyer just called Rep. Kevin McCarthy a coward because he didn’t want to listen to Hoyer bash him over DHS bill.

#StenyHoyer has a hissy fit because GOP doesn’t endorse lawless president’s actions. http://t.co/diHt1ewSMn
