Trey Gowdy issues grim warning to Dems: ‘There will come a day you long for the law’

Democrats and their liberal allies celebrating President Obama’s executive amnesty and deliberate disregard for the rule of law got a grave warning Wednesday from U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy.

“You may benefit from the president’s failure to enforce the law today,” the South Carolina Republican said during a House Judiciary Committee hearing.

“But I’ll make you this promise: There will come a day where you will cry out for the enforcement of the law. There will come a day when you long for the law to be the foundation of this republic.

“So you be careful what you do with the law today, because if you weaken it today, you weaken it forever.”

The hearing was focused on the executive amnesty Obama announced in November, two weeks after his party – and his policies – were soundly rejected by American voters in the midterm elections.

As Gowdy noted in his comments, before the election, Obama had said more than 20 times he had not power under the Constitution to declare amnesty for illegal aliens by executive fiat. It was only after the elections that the suddenly liberated lame duck decided otherwise.

That decision was wrong, Gowdy said.

“His position may have changed, but the Constitution has not,” Gowdy said, going on to list specific powers the presidency does have. “He has a lot of power … but he cannot do is make the law himself …

“We live in a country where process matters.”

There was a time – before Barack Obama — when Democrats understood that.

As Gowdy warned, there will be a time when they’ll wish they understood it now.
