The murderer of “American Sniper” Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield was brought to justice late Tuesday night.
Eddie Ray Routh was found guilty of capital murder and was immediately sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole by Judge Jason Cashon. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.
Routh had confessed to the killings, so the particulars were never in doubt.
The defense argued that he should be found not guilty by reason of insanity.
“He killed those men because he had a delusion. He believed in his mind that they were going to kill him,” his attorney J. Warren St. John said.
But the jury didn’t buy it and took less than three hours of deliberation to convict him.
“We have waited two years for God to give [us] justice on behalf of our son,” said Littlefield’s mother, Judy, outside the courthouse following the verdict. “And as always, God has proven to be faithful. We are so grateful we have this verdict here tonight.”
Casey Stegall reported on the dramatic closing arguments from the Texas courthouse on “The Kelly File,” saying that it became too much for Kyle’s widow when the defense made it sound like her husband was on trial.
“Taya Kyle stormed out of the courtroom during the defense’s go at it. She slammed the door. Everyone turned around and looked. We didn’t know what was going on,” Stegall said. “It happened when a member of the defense team started saying that even Chris Kyle knew that Eddie Ray Routh was not quite right.”
Kyle had sent Littlefield a text about Routh saying, “This dude is straight up nuts,” according to the defense.
The Twitterverse exploded with jubilation in response to the conviction.
