Florida in national spotlight for secretly using controversial tracking ‘stingrays’ – Local law enforcement agencies in Florida are coming under fire for using tracking devices for routine crimes. The American Civil Liberties Union obtained documents by court order that detailed the use of “controversial surveillance technology by local police departments for routine crimes is far more widespread than previously reported,” Catherine Herridge of Fox News said on “Happening Now” Monday. Florida senators carry a combined $144 million in personal wealth – Florida’s most deliberative legislative body is getting richer. The combined net worth of the Florida Senate’s 40 members was nearly $144 million, a Watchdog analysis of financial disclosures filed with the Florida Commission on Ethics last year shows. The total marks a 7.1 percent increase over the previous year and an 18 percent jump since the 2011 reporting deadline. Read more
Florida companies push U.S. to license ferry services to Cuba – Catamaran builder Brian Hall is too young to remember when ferries plied the route between Florida and Cuba in the 1950s, but he has plans to be among the first to revive the once-popular route. Boosted by President Barack Obama’s policy of seeking to normalize relations with the Communist-ruled island after decades of U.S. isolation, Hall hopes to offer a high-speed catamaran service between the Florida Keys and Havana, perhaps as soon as this year. Names roll in for Jeb Bush PAC fundraiser in Gables – Big donors have been named “co-chairmen” of an upcoming Coral Gables fundraiser for Jeb Bush’s political action committee. The March 9 soiree, organized by healthcare magnate Mike Fernandez, on Monday listed more than a dozen people contributing and raising money for Bush’s Right to Rise PAC. A $100,000 contribution gets a donor on what the PAC calls the “Florida Executive Committee.” Fernandez wrote in an email that he intends for the reception to raise $5 million, Politico reported. About $1 million would come from him. Read more
