If a vote to confirm President Obama’s nominee for attorney general makes it to the Senate floor, at least one Republican is guaranteed to vote no: Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
That’s because, Cruz said, the career prosecutor President Obama has nominated to replace Eric Holder has spent her life in law enforcement, but would spend her time in the White House as enforcer for a lawless president.
In an interview with Newsmax, Cruz, a potential contender for the Republican nomination in 2016, said Loretta Lynch’s performance during her confirmation hearings had made up his mind.
When Cruz – a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee – got his turn to question Lynch at the Jan. 28 hearing, he focused on Obama’s executive amnesty for illegal aliens, which the White House is spinning as a use of prosecutorial discretion and opponents see as remaking the law outright.
“One of my concerns with the Holder Justice Department is at every turn when asked, what are the limits of government power, the answer has been ‘there are none, there are none, there are none,’” Cruz said during the hearing.
Repeatedly, he asked if there are limits to the president’s power to decide not to enforce a law passed by Congress. Repeatedly, Lynch declined to give him the limit he was looking for.
“Unfortunately Mrs. Lynch, through the course of the entire hearing, refused to acknowledge a single limit on the president’s authority under the Constitution,” Cruz told Newsmax. “When I asked her in what ways she would differ from Eric Holder, she said no ways whatsoever.”
And that doesn’t just mean Lynch would be as bad as Holder, Cruz said.
“I think she would be materially worse,” he said.
