Police officer ambushed near patrol car; shooter at large

In a scenario eerily similar to the one that played out in New York City when two police officers were assassinated, a Minneapolis officer was shot Saturday morning while standing by his patrol car.

Fortunately, while there is little doubt the officer was the “intended target,” he is expected to survive.

According to CNN, the officer and his partner had just finished responding to a burglary call when he was shot while standing outside their squad car. His partner rushed him to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

“The chief is now with this officer and his family is with him, as well,” police spokesman Scott Seroka told CNN. “He is doing OK.”

“There is little doubt that an officer was the intended target of this shooting and that this officer just happened to be the one who was there,” Police Chief Janee Harteau said in a statement.

Harteau stressed that the wounded officer was targeted because of his uniform.

“This is a reminder to all that every one of our officers face such danger simply because they choose to wear a uniform,” she said. “They deserve our support and gratitude.”

The shooter remains at large.
