If you are a Barack Obama fan and want to help him, the last thing you should do is compare him to Ronald Reagan.
But that is precisely what two Obama supporters did Saturday.
The first was The Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart, who took issue with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s contention that Obama “thinks about, looks at and talks about America” differently than past presidents.
“Rudy Giuliani is lying,” Capehart said on MSNBC’s “Up With Steve Kornacki.” “And anyone who’s been paying attention to Barack Obama since he wowed the Democratic Convention in 2004 knows how much the president loves this country.”
Then, the National Journal’s Ron Fournier took the rhetoric a giant step further when he said: “Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama vowed to transform America. Because of their love for it.”
Naturally, the Twitterverse seized the opportunity to excoriate the Obama apologists.
.@ron_fournier I’m sure Obama’s love for America allowed him to bravely stay silent for 20 years of this https://t.co/fThtR6GtKS

.@ron_fournier And we know 2008 was the first time in the First Lady’s adult life that she was proud of America https://t.co/qcyIXOS97h

@ron_fournier Ridiculous. Reagan wanted to restore America. Obama wanted to transform it. You don’t transform something you love.

@JimDAnchower @ron_fournier Reagan also made us feel great about being American!.. He “restored” that feeling!!
— Tim Jankowski (@TimJankowski4) February 21, 2015
@ron_fournier If ur wife said, “I love you. But I’ve always wanted you to wear a toupee & stop saying “ya know,” think you’d feel the love?
— David Rowe (@dvdrowe) February 21, 2015
@prjman @ron_fournier To this point . . . Reagan –> love –> restoration . . . Obama –> grievance –> transformation.
— Luis Alvarez, Jr. (@Lalvahoo) February 21, 2015
@ron_fournier Reagan was going forward. Obama is stuck in reverse.
— Scott Good (@SkidWillie) February 21, 2015
@ron_fournier – You wrote Reagan vowed to ‘transform. Reagan did not vow to ‘transform’ the US into something else..
