Marie Harf’s college thesis may explain how she landed a job with this administration

In case there’s any doubt, the college honors thesis by State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf seems to confirm that she has always been clueless when it comes to foreign policy.

According to Indiana University records,  Harf wrote her thesis on “how conservative evangelical support for Israel complicates U.S. foreign policy.”

Considering the animosity President Obama displays toward Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the theme makes her a perfect fit for his administration.

marie-HarfHarf has been the target of intense ridicule since an appearance on MSNBC early in the week, where she told host Chris Matthews the way to defeat 7th century Islamic State barbarians is to offer them jobs.

“But we cannot win this war by killing them, we cannot kill our way out of this war,” she said. “We need, in the longer term, medium and longer term, to go after the root causes that leads people to join these groups, whether it’s lack of opportunity for jobs.”

The dubious position resulted in a relentless wave of “jobs for jihadis” spoofs directed at the White House.

A story published in the Indiana University newsletter stated that Harf followed in her father’s footsteps by studying political science at the school — Jim Harf earned a Ph.D. in political science in 1969, and was a professor at Ohio State University for many years.

Her father’s role at Ohio State involved foreign travel, and Marie accompanied him often.

“Everywhere I went I dragged her along,” he said, according to the newsletter.

“Just as I became interested in the major trouble spot of my day, which was the Soviet Union, she developed an interest in the major trouble spot of her day, the Middle East,” he said.

Somewhat ironically, 9/11 helped shape Marie Harf’s career plans.

“After 9/11 I knew I wanted to work for the government and help fight my generation’s war, the war against al-Qaida,” she said in 2011.

If only she had pursued a degree in human resources.
