An armed would-be robber didn’t get his chance to raid a West Virginia pharmacy Wednesday after the pharmacist defended himself and others using his second amendment rights.
The attempted robbery at the Good Family Pharmacy in Pinch, W. Va. ended with the fatal shooting of assailant Terry Gillenwater, 25, reported the Charleston Gazette.
The incident happened at 9:45 a.m. and took employees by complete surprise.
The following is surveillance footage of the incident. *Warning* to viewers – this is raw footage.
Employee Mark Monk said that the pharmacist, Don Radcliff, was joking with the man who entered their establishment wearing a bandana over his face.
Radcliff wanted to “feel the guy out,” said Monk. And said he was “just kind of joking with him,” and asked, “Are you here to rob me?”
That’s when Gillenwater pulled out his gun.
Radcliff responded by firing the gun he had hidden under his pharmacy coat. Gillenwater was hit three times while he unsuccessfully tried to return fire, according to an employee at the scene.
Gillenwater’s gun was jammed by one of the Radcliffe’s shots, while the other two hit him in the chest and abdomen.
Radcliff and a pharmacy intern administered aid to the suspect until police arrived.
“Why did you make me do this? I didn’t mean to do this,” Radcliff reportedly was heard saying by employees while he tried to stop the man’s bleeding.
Gillenwater died later at the hospital.
“He’s [Radcliff’s] a lot more tore up now that he found out the guy died,” Joe Good, the pharmacy owner told the Gazette.
Good was on his way to work when the attempted robbery happened and filled in for Radcliff for the remainder of his shift.
“We cleaned it up pretty quickly and got back to work,” Monk said. “There was no blood – just the glass.”
The pharmacy remained open and serviced a steady stream of customers throughout the rest of the day.
Although the Good Family Pharmacy had never been robbed in the past, Good said employees prepare for the possibility, just in case.
“It’s always in the back of your mind. You just try to be prepared for it, because it happens.”
