A new audit report highlights a massive governmental misuse of taxpayer money – to the tune of $37 million per month – within the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.
An audit by HUD’s Office of Inspector General discovered that the department provided “free” housing for 201,000 unqualified tenets, according to the Washington Times.
The department rules say that certain community service requirements are to be met before people can qualify for the government subsidy. The meager requirements to get the housing benefit include completing at least eight hours of community service each month or participating in an economic self-sufficiency program.
Certain exemptions apply for those with disabilities, but the audit has revealed that “hundreds of thousands” of seemingly able-bodied people are being marked by HUD as exempt from having to participate in the light requirements.
Because heaven forbid tenants work or learn to become self-sufficient.
Auditors found that the department offered the entitlements by extending or renewing leases for nearly 106,000 houses with noncompliant residents.
“It’s outrageous that the government is spending half a billion dollars in taxpayer funds to give free rent to 100,000 households that can pay their own way,” said Ryan Ellis of Americans for Tax Reform.
“There’s a hand up, and there’s a slap in the face. This is the latter,” he said.
Not only is the fraud a slap in the face to the hard-working taxpayers who foot the bill, but it’s a slap in the face to those who truly need assistance.
“Almost every city has a waiting list for public housing. Given that you’ve got a limited supply of assisted housing, there are people who are eligible who aren’t receiving benefits because people who aren’t eligible are getting those benefits,” said Mark Calabria a former HUD official.
