A prominent civil rights attorney with an “anti-gun” reputation was arrested at Cleveland Hopkins Airport for having a concealed handgun, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.
David Malik, who was the first attorney to represent the family of Tamir Rice — the 12-year-old shot and killed by police in November when he brandished a realistic looking pellet gun — was arrested Saturday after airport security found a .22 caliber handgun and a box of ammunition in his possession.
Malik offered an excuse in a statement released Sunday.
“I participated in a target shooting class recently with a certified CCW instructor and I simply forgot to remove it from my bag,” the statement read, according to the Plain Dealer. “I used the bag to pack for my trip. It was a stupid mistake.”
The news came as a surprise to some in the Cleveland law enforcement community.
“What’s interesting about David is he is such an anti-gun person,” Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association president Steve Loomis told reporters. “He’s such an anti-violence person, and of all the things for him to get arrested for, that really surprises me.”
If Loomis is correct and Malik is “anti-gun,” why does he own a gun at all?
The attorney spent Saturday night in jail and was released on bond Sunday.
