New Zealand officers helped rescue a woman from a terrifying situation as she was trapped in her sinking vehicle in an Auckland harbor.
The 63-year-old could be seen climbing into the back seat to reach a small air pocket as the water quickly rose around her.
Officers Paul Watts and Simon Russell arrived at the scene and found two civilians trying to hold up the car. They believed the woman only had minutes to live.
“When we entered the water, I was talking to one of the (civilians) who was trying to balance the vehicle and he said he was looking for a rock to try and smash the window,” Russell said.
“I tried my baton which failed and then I tried looking on the ocean floor…” he said.
With only minutes left, Watts used a rock and shattered the back window. The men were able to pull the woman from the car and carry her to safety.
“At that time the car actually started to move very fast into the water. I was trying to hold the car, slowing it down from entering the water,” Russell said.
“It was pretty close, probably 30 or 40 seconds after we managed to get the female out of the car, the car was already slipping further into the water,” Watts said.
“I’d say she probably only had a maximum of another minute or minute-and-a-half if she hadn’t got out.”
“She was quite distressed,” Watts said.
The woman was distressed, but safe, thanks to the rescuers. She is reported to be in stable in condition, according the NZ Herald.
The car was pulled from the bottom of the Harbor and investigators hope it will reveal some clues as to what circumstances led to the accident.
