Shots fired; mayhem erupts as nearly 1,000 teens storm movie theater

Nearly 1,000 teenagers overran a suburban mall movie theater in Ocoee, Fla. Sunday night, causing a riot that spread outside the mall.

About 200 kids got inside the theater before security gates were closed.  Witnesses reported shots fired outside, according to WKMG-TV.

“Everybody just started scattering, ducking underneath the seats,” said movie-goer Kenny Johnson. “It was a scary moment.”

WKMG reported:

“At that point, since we’re dealing with 800 to 900 juveniles, they called for assistance from surrounding agencies,” said Lt. Paul Hopkins, of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. “We all formed together and were successfully able to get all these kids out of the mall area.”

Once police got the situation under control inside the mall, someone fired a gunshot into the air outside.

Another person was robbed in the parking lot and officers recovered a stolen car with drugs inside.

Apparently, the teens used Facebook to arrange the mob, and this is not the first time it’s happened at the same movie theater in Ocoee.

Hopkins said “”(It’s) a big concern to us that are juveniles are doing this at such an early age.

These are middle to high school kids who have guns, who are shooting guns, are robbing people, driving stolen cars and they have drugs in their cars.”

Two teens were arrested, and no injuries were reported.

This is all the more reason why parents should monitor their kids’ Internet usage.  Bored teens on a holiday weekend can quickly get out of control.
