Couple who shared 10,000 love notes over 4 decades offers timeless advice for Valentine’s Day

A true story of love and commitment from a New York couple offers great advice for a happy marriage just before Valentine’s Day.

Bill Bresnan has been writing his wife Kris personal love notes, every day, since they met in 1974, according to CBS New York.

The couple has accrued 10,000 love notes that each include Bill’s special insignia meant just for his wife.

“My Love: Thank you for being you and loving me,” read a note from 1989 that they shared with CBS.

The dedicated husband says he’s been writing Kris notes since the time when they used to commute together.

“While we were on the Long Island Railroad having coffee together I’d scribble a little something a napkin or write it on the end of a newspaper and that kept developing until I gave her actual cards,” Bill said.

The sweet sentiment was not lost on Kris who secretly began organizing the notes by date. A collection they now call their love diary.

“They weren’t all love letters. They were hilarious, very funny, cute, not all mushy mushy, all kinds,” Kris said.

When asked about the secrets of a long and happy marriage, the couple says they never go to bed angry with each other.

“We kiss goodnight and it’s like starting the next morning with a clean slate,” Bill said.

The Bresnans say that courting each other through marriage doesn’t have to be complicated.

“Do things together, have fun together, love each other,” Bill said.

The couple’s love story continues while they face the large task of screening decades of written memories to decide which notes are appropriate to hand down to their four children – and which will forever remain just between Bill and Kris.

“My biggest fear, and I guess this is human nature, as I get older my biggest fear is the day I forget to give it [my letter] to her,” Bill said.

For the Bresnans, the personal touch of a handwritten note cannot be replaced by today’s technological advances. Their last advice for younger generations – put down the cell phones and engage with one another.
