Angry parents turn 50 shades of red over sexually graphic word search puzzle in school

Someone’s going to be disciplined for this.

Students in a western Pennsylvania middle school got a lesson they weren’t expecting when a teacher passed out word search puzzles based on the sexually graphic novel “50 Shades of Grey,” according to WTAE Action News 4 in Pittsburgh.

James Carter, the father of a boy at Monessen Middle School in Westmoreland County told the station his eighth-grade son brought the puzzle home from school and said a teacher had distributed it in class.

“I asked my son who passed it out, and he said the teacher passed it out,” Carter told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4. “I don’t think this is what they should be doing in the 8th grade level.”

The puzzle included searches for words based on the novel’s kinky sex theme, including “submissive,” “spanking,” “leather cuffs” and much more inappropriate selections.

Carter told the station he went to the school to learn who had distributed it to the students but administrators wouldn’t talk to him because he wanted to record the discussion, according to The Associated Press.

So he went to the Monessen School Board meeting Tuesday night to find out more.

“I wanted to record the conversation because a lot of parents had questions about it, and I was denied that,” he said at the meeting, AP reported.

At the meeting, Monessen school officials said they were still trying to find out what happened.

However, one board member who was not at the meeting told reporters it was an accident.

“It was a huge but unintentional error and collected from the five students involved as soon as it was realized,” Roberta Bergstedt wrote in an email, according to AP. “Unfortunately, one copy was taken by a student who then posted it on social media.”

The movie opens Friday.

Monessen Middle School students will be too young to get in.
