A harrowing Los Angeles police chase ended with an armed man being shot several times on live television during Monday’s evening rush hour.
Police attempted to pull over Aaron Lorta, 29, who was reportedly driving a stolen vehicle. The man fled, leading to a terrifying evening commute for many Los Angeles residents, the Los Angeles Times reported.
After a 15-minute chase, Lorta crashed his vehicle before he carjacked a young woman at gunpoint.
“He just came up to me and pointed the gun at me and told me to get out of my car,” Elizabeth Yarahuan, 22, told the Times.
Crowded freeways didn’t stop Lorta, who weaved through streets and crashed into cars as he fled.
The chase finally ended when his vehicle was immobilized by heavy traffic.
At that point, Lorta left the second stolen vehicle and looked to be trying to carjack yet another from nearby commuters while being chased on foot by about a dozen officers, according to the Times.
The pursuit finally ended in Montebello, when police fired at Lorta after he brandished a gun. He was arrested and taken to the hospital.
Latest reports say Lorta, a parole and alleged gang member, is in stable condition at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.
“This individual put innocent people’s lives in danger, even after the police backed off the pursuit and tracked with the helicopter. Thank God no one was killed by this maniac,” Los Angeles Police Department Cmdr. Andy Smith told the the Times.
“This individual acted with a complete disregard for other people’s lives,” he said.
