Former CBS reporter Attkisson asks why it was OK when Hillary told a lie like Brian Williams

Former CBS News investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson discussed a lie told and doubled down on by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2008.

In light of the whopper told by NBC “Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams, that was the main topic of discussion during Attkisson’s appearance Monday on Newsmax TV’s “The Steve Malzberg Show.”

Given Williams’ current troubles, it brought up the question: Do we expect more from reporters than we do presidential candidates and secretaries of state?

Malzberg played a clip of the 2008 Attkisson report outlining the Clinton lie, claiming she arrived in Bosnia as first lady under sniper fire.

“And that’s what happened,” Clinton said of her recollection of events.

Attkisson told the then-Sen. Clinton that CBS News had a video that negated her story — yet she continued telling it.

“Once she knew that we had a video is beyond me why she continued to tell the tale,” the veteran reporter told Malzberg. “We showed the video that she landed on the runway, stood there for seconds, later visited with the troops, took photographs with them.”

Everything on that Bosnian day was calm — no snipers.

“There was no apparent danger to us. There was no mention of it. There was no corkscrew landing. There was no sniper fire,” Attkisson said, ticking off the points.

“So, you kind of wonder,” she said. “In both instances there were so many other people who knew this wasn’t true, how they got away so long with telling the story. How they thought they would get away with this without somebody coming to them saying, ‘That didn’t happen.’”

Then Attkisson got to the real issue — whom do we hold accountable for their lies?

“To me, part of the irony is, if Brian Williams isn’t able to survive it,” she pointed out. “And yet we didn’t care as much with somebody who became our secretary of state. Is it really more important that Brian Williams has a certain character and honesty that a presidential candidate or secretary of state?”

Good question.
