The Middle East is disintegrating under a tide of terrorism led by the Islamic State, requiring an immediate national security response from the Obama administration. And it has met the call with its usual aplomb.
Heading the White House’s priority list is a commitment to fight “the very real threat of climate change” and promote gay rights, National Security Advisor Susan Rice told a gathering at the Brookings Institute Friday, according to CNS News.
It sounds as though the White House is suffering from another case of disengagement syndrome.
Although Rice conceded that America has to be committed to “countering the corrosive ideology of violent extremism,” she said any action must be tempered by a “sense of perspective.”
“Still, while the dangers we face may be more numerous and varied, they are not of the existential nature we confronted during World War II or during the Cold War,” Rice said. “We cannot afford to be buffeted by alarmism in a nearly instantaneous news cycle.”
Alarmism? Islamic State terrorists are stoning women, crucifying children, beheading men and setting Jordanian pilots afire, and America’s national security advisor doesn’t think that’s alarming?
“American leadership is addressing the very real threat of climate change,” Rice said. “The science is clear. The impacts of climate change will only worsen over time — even longer droughts, more severe storms, more forced migration. So we’re making smart decisions today that will pay off for generations.”
Clearly, racial, gender and LGBT equality has somehow found its way into the mix of America’s national security response. ISIS terrorists must be quaking in their boots.
