The Stars and Stripes reporter who broke the Brian Williams “big lie” story told Fox News host Megyn Kelly that veterans who were in Iraq when the NBC News anchor’s helicopter was supposedly hit by an RPG are incensed.
“What they [the veterans] told me was from the very beginning, they felt that this story was misreported and misrepresented and really they’ve been frustrated and angry about it since then,” reporter Travis Tritten told Kelly.
Worse yet, in the years since the 2003 non-incident incident, Williams has embellished the story.
As it turns out, a Chinook helicopter of three traveling north was hit by a rocket propelled grenade. Williams, however, was in another company of Chinooks traveling in the opposite direction.
Williams’ flight was uneventful, but he claimed his chopper was subjected to ground fire.
As his story evolved, “ground fire” became “being hit by an RPG” to his pilot being awarded a Purple Heart for injuries to his ear.
NBC News, for its part, has kept pretty mum about the whole affair, even as reports of other Williams’ exaggerations have surfaced.
It was widely reported, however, that Tom Brokaw, Williams’ predecessor at the NBC anchor desk, wanted his successor’s head on a platter. Brokaw has since denied those claims, although he didn’t offer Williams any support, either.
“I have neither demanded nor suggested Brian be fired,” Brokaw said, according to Fox News. “His future is up to Brian and NBC News executives.”
