The photo of an adolescent ISIS supporter beaming at the sight of the Jordanian fighter pilot being consumed by flames makes one thing crystal clear — even if every Islamic State terrorist is killed, there’s a whole new generation waiting in the wings ready to take their place.
With that in mind, the civilized world should focus on prevention — not de-radicalization — to combat Islamic terror, former extremist Maajid Nawaz told Fox News host Megyn Kelly on “The Kelly File” Wednesday.
“It’s a lot more inefficient to de-radicalize Islamists once they have joined organizations like ISIL,” he told Kelly.
The first step, he said, is for Muslim clerics and leaders as well as political leaders to name the threat for what it is — Islamic extremism.
The problem is that “civil society needs to take a hand at challenging this ideology, yet we don’t name the ideology,” he told Kelly, and likened it to a “Harry Potter” scenario,
“If you can’t name Voldemort, everyone fears him even more. When we don’t name the Islamist ideology, what happens as a result is that people who naturally don’t know about my own religion, Islam, will think it’s the religion that’s at fault itself,” Nawaz said.
But he doesn’t see the Obama administration naming the threat.
“But that would require some leadership and unfortunately I don’t see too much of that at the moment,” he said.
