Jordan vows ‘earth-shaking’ revenge; starts by executing prisoners in response to burning pilot

Jordan responded Wednesday to the burning death of a captured  fighter pilot by Islamic State terrorists by hanging two Islamic State prisoners it had in custody and vowing further “punishment and earth-shaking revenge.”

One of the two prisoners was Sajida al-Rishawi, the failed suicide bomber ISIS asked for in exchange for the Jordanian pilot. The other was Zaid Karbouli, a close aid to the Jordanian-born terror mastermind Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi before Zarqawi’s death in a U.S. bombing strike in 2006.

“While the military forces mourn the martyr, they emphasize his blood will not be shed in vain. Our punishment and revenge will be as huge as the loss of the Jordanians,” Colonel Mamdouh al Ameri, an army spokesman said in a televised address Tuesday following the death of pilot, Mouath al-Kasaesbeh.

King Abdullah II said he received the news of the pilot’s “martyrdom with sadness and deep sorrow” and called the murder a “cowardly act of terror” in an address on Jordan’s State TV Tuesday from Washington where he was in town to meet with President Obama.

Jordan said last week it was willing to trade al-Rishawi for al-Kasaesbeh provided ISIS provided “proof of life” for the pilot.

That proof never came.

The pilot was burned to death in a cage on Jan. 3.
