Donations topping $200k pour in to hard worker who walks 21 miles to work

Hard work has paid off in a big way for Detroit factory worker James Robertson, who walks 21 miles round trip to work every day.

When Wayne State University student Evan Leedy, 19, heard the story he wanted to find some way to help.

“At first I wanted to figure how to get James a ride to where he needs to go,” Leedy told the “Today Show.”

Then he decided to start a GoFundMe page with a goal of $5,000 to help Robertson purchase a car.

“I wasn’t expecting it to go anywhere,” he said.

To his surprise, within one hour he raised $2,000 towards the goal. By the end of the day Monday, it had ballooned to $37,000. As of Tuesday, it stood at an astounding $200,000.

“One of the coolest things to see is that there’s been a few large donations, but 90 percent of the donations have been $50 or less. There have been over 2,000 donors, and all of that has added up. All it took was a little bit of money from all these people,” he told “Today.”

Robertson never asked for anything other than the opportunity to work.

“I didn’t want to end up doing nothing. Do you know how long it took me to find this job?” he told “Today.” ”No matter how tough things are, I like to stick it out.”

His shift is from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m and he doesn’t get home until around 4 am. The alarm awakens him at 6 a.m.to do it again giving him a mere two hours sleep.

Tanya Fox, 61, his girlfriend with whom he lives, said all of this attention is “weird for him,” but they are both thankful.

“We’re both elated and he’s overwhelmed,” she said. “He didn’t think something like this would even happen to him.”

Robertson is a man who exemplifies the American spirit of hard work and determination and this good fortune couldn’t happen to someone more deserving.
