Immigration reform news 2015: Rep. Carlos Curbelo launches ‘What A Country!’ PAC, supports Republicans for immigration reform – Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., launched a political action committee (PAC) to raise funds for Republicans seeking immigration reform. According to Curbelo, the What A Country! PAC, or WAC PAC, will attract money to contribute to campaigns for Republicans in favor of border security, immigration reform and solutions with undocumented immigrants. The Miami Herald noted the WAC PAC was registered with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Jan. 14. Latin Post contacted Curbelo’s office for information and a comment on WAC PAC, but they have yet to respond. Read more

Jeb Bush’s bond with Barack Obama on education poses 2016 challenge for him – Standing before a massive American flag, Jeb Bush began a withering attack on President Barack Obama. “On energy, he waffles. On immigration, he hasn’t led. On foreign policy, he doesn’t lead, even from behind. On the family, he is captive to the special interest of the left.” On the economy, “he is an utter and complete failure.” The speech came at a June 2013 dinner for the Conservative Party of New York State, foreshadowing Bush’s entry in the 2016 presidential race. But the indictment conspicuously avoided the subject the former Florida governor knows best: education. Read more

FDOH urges Florida residents to get vaccinated against measles – The Florida Department of Health said it is working with other state and federal officials to monitor individuals who may have been exposed to measles cases across the state. Four cases of measles have been identified and reported among travelers in the past two weeks with unknown or no measles vaccinations who visited Florida, health officials said. Two cases involved international travelers. “It’s important all Floridians make sure they have received the measles vaccination because those who are fully immunized have very little risk of developing the disease,” said State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong. Florida House speaker not swayed by Indiana-style Medicaid expansion – Florida House Speaker Steve Crisafulli says he’s a “never-say-never kind of guy” but it keeps sounding like he and Medicaid expansion are never, ever getting back together. Crisafulli, a Merritt Island Republican, last week told a meeting of Florida’s reporters and editors that “we’re not going to be doing anything on the issue,” referring to increasing access to health care for about 1 million working poor under the federal Affordable Care Act. That disappointed the state’s advocates of Medicaid expansion, but they took some heart last week in news from Indiana — a state that resisted pressure as long as Florida had to accept federal dollars for expansion. Florida cattle requests new marketing program from Legislature – Florida cattle officials have asked the Legislature to create a marketing program that could raise up to $900,000 annually to promote beef consumption and research in the state. Called the “Beef Checkoff Program” after the 30-year-old national effort of the same name, the Florida version also would raise money through a $1 assessment on the sale of a every head of cattle. If approved by the Legislature, which begins its annual 60-day session March 3, and the governor, Florida cattle ranchers also must consent to the program by a majority vote in a referendum to be held within 6 months of its enactment.
