House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, who considers herself Catholic, is fairly certain she knows more than the Pope when it comes to having babies.
The mother of five was discussing the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act which would look to restrict late-term abortions. The bill stalled thanks to opposition from a surprising source — Republicans who said they feared the bill would be seen as an attack on women and would be detrimental to the party.
Pelosi took the opportunity at her weekly presser to declare her supreme knowledge on the topic of reproduction.
“It isn’t an ideological fight, it’s a personal health issue,” she said. “And as a mother of five, in six years, I have great standing on this issue. Great understanding of it. More than my colleagues.
“One day many years ago, maybe even before you were born, when I was a new member of Congress,” she said as she began spinning her yarn. “One of the Republican members got up and said ‘Nancy Pelosi thinks she knows more about having babies than the Pope.’ Yeah. Yeah that would be true.”
Ironically her comments come of the heels of the current Pope’s own statements on reproduction Monday.
“God gives you methods to be responsible,” he said. “Some think that, excuse the word, that in order to be good Catholics we have to be like rabbits. No.”
Considering some of this Pope’s other comments on topics like homosexuality, and Pelosi’s pro-choice take on abortion, neither seem to be sticklers for Catholic tradition.
