Authorities threaten parents for letting kids walk home alone from park

Maryland parents could face neglect charges after allowing their children to walk home from the park. The couple is outraged and speaking out to the media about it.

Authorities cited the family after someone called and said they witnessed two young children walking alone, which led to an infuriating ordeal, according to Danielle Meitev, who along with her husband Alexander, practice “free range parenting.”

After investigating, police found the children walking back from the park, located about a mile from home, and returned them to the parents.

Meitev told Fox and Friends host Elizabeth Hasselbeck that they teach their children ”independence” and that they have been practicing walking the same route for a long period.

“My son is ten and he probably started doing this on his own about seven walking around the block and then he could go to the store…my daughter is six and last year she started going around the block with her brother and six months ago they started going to a local park,” Meitev said.

Montgomery County Child Protective Services followed up after the report and investigated the couple at their home, as well as requesting an interview with the children at school.

The couple was required to sign and implement a safety plan that instructs the parents to not allow the children to walk home alone. When her husband refused to sign without an attorney, authorities threatened to take the kids away immediately, according to the Fox interview.

“We feel we are being bullied into a point of view about child-rearing that we strongly disagree with” said Alexander Meitiv.

Fox News reported:

“The world is actually even safer than when I was a child, and I just want to give them the same freedom and independence that I had — basically an old-fashioned childhood,” Danielle, a climate-science consultant, told the paper. The report said the kids would often carry a laminated card that states “I am not lost. I am a free-range kid.”
