Instead of extending an olive branch to police, New York City’s mayor delivered another thumb to their eye.
On Wednesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio reappointed Judge Laura Johnson just days after she freed two gang members charged with threatening police.
One defendant, Devon Coley, 18, posted a picture to Facebook showing a man shooting into the driver’s side of a New York City police cruiser with the caption “73Nextt,” referring to the 73rd percent that patrols his neighborhood.
“I Googled all of you. Find out where you live. I don’t know about dead cops or your families,” Travis Maye, the other defendant, posted to Facebook. “I will meet you in a bodega and get you. You will die.”
Police officials are angry at de Blasio for his decision.
“The mayor’s actions of reappointing this judge are completely hypocritical to his argument that he’s pro-police and counterproductive to what he claims to be an effort to open dialogue going forward,” Ed Mullins, chief of the sergeants union, told the New York Post.
“He had the opportunity to demonstrate good will and support for the police, and he once again has demonstrated the opposite,” he added.
Sgt. Patrick Cullen, president of the New York State Supreme Court Officers Association, spoke with Brian Kilmeade on “Fox and Friends” Friday to deride the reappointment.
“It’s a disgraceful decision by this mayor who, it’s become apparent, has been motivated solely by the advancement of his radical agenda.” Cullen said.
“I think he’s lost control. I think his first year in office has been an unmitigated disaster,” he added. “I think he’d serve New York City well by purging his entire advisory staff and bringing in a group of people who are professional and have had success in operating, successfully, city government.”
The host pointed out that arrests and summonses are down in what seems like a response to the cops believing the mayor doesn’t support them.
“I don’t know what’s next. I fear its gonna get worse before it gets better,” Cullen said.
If the mayor keeps making anti-police decisions like this, that’s a guarantee.
