De Blasio booed, heckled, called a ‘traitor’ at NYPD cadet graduation

There appears to be no hope to mend the rift between the New York City police and the city’s Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The mayor was greeted with venom Monday when he appeared at the graduation ceremony of the department’s new recruits at Madison Square Garden.

As de Blasio took the stage, an audible current of “boos” rolled through the crowd, giving the lie to the polite applause that greeted the mayor.  Some in the crowd even shouted “Traitor!” the New York Post reported.

“You will confront all manner of problems,” de Blasio said during his speech. “Problems that you didn’t create.”

“You did!” someone in the crowd yelled back at him to cheers.

“We have a responsibility to you to keep you safe,” de Blasio added. “That begins with giving you the very finest training, the most rigorous training, and you have received that at the academy.”

It would have been nice if he remembered that responsibility when he was telling the press he had to train his bi-racial son to be afraid of police. Or when he based a good portion of his campaign for mayor on deriding the police force, particularly the “stop and frisk” program.

After his speech the audience did applaud, perhaps because they didn’t have to listen to him anymore, the Post reported.

There was also a moment of silence for fallen officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu.

Some posted about the incident on Twitter.
