Poisoned rift between NYPD, liberal mayor is here for the long term, police commissioner says

The New York Police Department was wounded with the actions of Mayor Bill de Blasio not defending them when protesters on Dec 13 chanted “What do we want…dead cops…when do we want it…right now,” and now they are not easy to forgive.

On Sunday morning’s “Meet the Press,” NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton told host Chuck Todd, it would take a long time for the police department to heal due to the rift with Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“I think it’s probably a rift that’s going to go on for a while longer,” Bratton said during Sunday’s interview. “The issues go far beyond the race relations in this city. They involve labor contracts, a lot of history in this city that’s really different from some of what’s going on in the country as a whole….There’s a whole series of local issues that are impacting on our ability to move forward.”

On Saturday, thousands of police officers standing outside the funeral ceremony of Officer Rafael Ramos turned their backs on Mayor de Blasio as he eulogized the fallen officer, who was assassinated last week along with his partner.

Earlier in the week during a news conference, as the mayor made his way through the sea of policemen to stand at the podium, all of the policemen turned their backs as a form of protest.
