‘I think I found a new favorite football player’: Jets center gains ‘mad respect’ for how he honored NYPD

Its about time a pro-athlete showed support for the good guys.

After so many athletes have done the “Hands Up Don’t Shoot” pose or worn “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirts finally one athlete has come out to show support for the men and women who protect and serve us every day.

NY Jets center Nick Mangold took the field on Sunday donning an NYPD hat in support of the two New York City police officers, Wenjian Liu and Ramon Ramos, who were killed execution style in an ambush on Saturday.

When the Jets took the field for their game against the New England Patriots Mangold replaced his helmet with the NYPD cap. He also held it over his heart during the national anthem, north jersey.com reported.

“For them to go out in the afternoon and not come home, that’s got to be tough. I was sitting there [Saturday] night, thinking about the opportunity that I have,” ” Mangold said to reporters. “It’s just support for the work that those men and women do.”

Mangold left the game with an injury and his cart was surrounded by players from both his team and The New England Patriots.

“That’s because everyone has a lot of respect for Nick and what he has done in this league. It was devastating to see him go down,” Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis said.

The gesture by Mangold created a buzz of support on Twitter.
