Did he quit or not?
While it’s not clear if he was just trying to be a big shot, legendary music icon Billy Joel allegedly said President Obama recently invited him to step out and have a cigarette with him, according to a source for The Hill.
“I’m going out on the North Portico to have a smoke,” Obama allegedly said to Joel, according to the source. “Do you want to come with me?”
The Hill reported that visitor logs show a “William Joel” visited the White House last December on the same day as the Kennedy Center Honors — Joel was an honoree last year.
Joel supposedly told the source, tagged as a “spy” by The Hill, that he had not smoked in a long time, but couldn’t turn down the offer to burn one with Obama.
According to The Washington Post, then-White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said in December 2010 that Obama had not smoked in “nine months.”
Obama himself claimed last year that he had not had a smoke in six years.
“I haven’t had a cigarette in six years … that’s because I’m scared of my wife,” Obama was overheard telling a United Nations official last September.
As for Joel, he wants no part of the notion that he may have ratted out Obama. The recording artist told the New York Daily News that the report is “untrue.”
“The Obama part of the story is completely untrue,” he said in a statement to the Daily News. “Nothing like that ever happened. I think their ‘spy’ had a few too many cocktails at that bar.”
Of course, the telltale sign may be if the president disappears for a few minutes after Thanksgiving dinner!
