CNN anchor grills Palestinian Ferguson protester; ‘I know what the media can do’

Self-described citizen journalist Bassem Masri appeared on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” on Sunday to defend allegations that he has been more of a hindrance than a help during protests over black teen Michael Brown’s shooting death by a white police officer.

Host Brian Stelter took Masri to task for what he described as thuggish behavior when Masri and fellow hooligans attempted to intimidate CNN correspondent Sarah Sidner as she was reporting from the scene of the protests.

Masri said it was “not personal” and that his actions were aimed “against basically the whole entity of the mainstream media.”

Stelter asked Masri what caused him and other agitators to shout down reporters trying to do their jobs.

“We’re not going to be just laying back and letting anybody paint whatever narrative they want when it comes to our community,” Masri said. “Every time I hear ‘protest,’ I hear ‘violent’ — when it’s been nothing but peaceful.”

Stelter showed Masri a video of some supposedly “peaceful” events, where protesters shouted such statements at police like, “Your life is in danger here, homie.”

“Aren’t you just trying to provoke the police there, trying to get more views maybe?” the CNN anchor asked.

At one point during the interview, Stelter asked Masri why he decided to become a “citizen” journalist.

“I’m a Palestinian,” Masri responded. “I know what the media can do.”

Masri said he is acting on behalf of the people of Ferguson, but his actions suggest he may have an entirely different agenda.

During previous protests, he shouted anti-Israel statements like: “You f—-ing lie about Ferguson. You lie about Occupy Wall Street. You lie about Palestine. You’re all run by Zionists. We’re holding y’all accountable.”

Accountability goes both ways, Mr. Masri.
