While it’s not clear if President Obama aspires to be more like Lady Gaga in reality, a distinct possibility, he certainly appears to envy her popularity in the social media world.
The president was speaking Saturday in Brisbane, Australia, at the University of Queensland and praised the school as “one of the world’s great institutions of science and teaching,” before taking the opportunity to brag about how many Twitter followers he has.
“In fact, last year I even tweeted one of your studies to my 31 million followers on Twitter,” Obama said, according to a White House transcript of his remarks. “Just bragging a little bit. I don’t think that’s quite as much as Lady Gaga, but it’s pretty good. That’s still not bad.”
Criticize the man as you will, but Obama has never lost sight of how critically important pop culture and the cult of personality has been to his success.
