Fox News host to atheists: Don’t mess with the South, the church is a big part of their culture

A Fox News host said this morning that atheists who want to take God out of public schools don’t understand the importance of Christianity to the culture of America’s South.

Ainsley Earhardt was referring specifically to the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation that has filed numerous complaints about what it claims are violations of the constitutional separation of church and state.

The FFRF said recently that it was considering a lawsuit to force the Midlothian Independent School District to remove plaques from two schools that refer to God and, obliquely, to Jesus. The district had covered the plaques after an initial threat of litigation from the FFRF, but later voted to uncover them.

“This is the same group that has attacked other schools in other states,” Earhardt said of the FFRF.

The plaques dedicate the buildings to “the education of our children and to their faithful teachers in the name of the holy Christian church,” and contain the phrase “soli deo gloria,” Latin for “glory to God alone.”

Earhardt interviewed Pastor Justin Coffman, who has children attending school in the district, and Tiffany Davlin, a local mother who organized demonstrations in favor of displaying the plaques.

“We’re all about wanting to see the cause of Christ go further,” Coffman said. “We want to see the cause of Christ in more public arenas in the American culture. We don’t want to take things away from, ‘We want to see Christ in our schools.’”

Davlin said that she thought it was wrong that an outside group could “come into a community, which is a strong Christian-majority community, and say what we can or cannot have.”

“Attempt to bully us,” Coffman added.

Earhardt, who grew up in the Carolinas, said that Christianity is an inseparable component of Southern culture.

“And I think, growing up in the South, people in Wisconsin, these atheists in other cities need to understand the culture in the South, and how church is a very integral part of our childhood and growing up, and it’s a very important part for the Southern culture.”
