0ptimus FL poll: Rick Scott tops Charlie Crist 41-40, no Fangate Effect found – Widely reported and heavily mocked, the ‘Fangate’ from Wednesday’s governor’s debate doesn’t appear to have had any effect on the race, according to a new poll from the Republican-leaning firm 0ptimus that shows the contested remains tied. Gov. Rick Scott gets 41 percent support from likely Florida voters and Democrat Charlie Crist gets 40 percent – a lead by the Republican that’s well within the poll’s 1.5 percentage-point margin of error. Meantime, Republicans have been outvoting Democrats when it comes to casting absentee ballots. More than 890,000 have been voted and GOP ballots outnumber Democratic ones, 48-35 percent. Read more
Marco Rubio to introduce travel ban bill – Sen. Marco Rubio announced Monday he will introduce legislation to create a temporary ban on new visas for nationals of the countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. The Florida Republican says he will introduce the bill in November when the Senate returns. While many Republicans have called for travel restrictions to fight Ebola, Rubio appears to be the first senator to announced an actual piece of legislation. The ban would remain in place until the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declares that the Ebola outbreak has been contained and could be extended to other countries if the virus spreads. Tom Slade, who led the Republican Party of Florida as Jeb Bush rose to power, dead at 78 – Tom Slade, who led the Republican Party of Florida as Jeb Bush and the GOP rose to power, died Monday after being hospitalized last week for heart failure, according to a statement released by a family spokeswoman. He was 78. Slade led the party from 1993 to 1999, a period in which Bush lost a 1994 election to Gov. Lawton Chiles, Republicans took over the Legislature and Bush won the governorship in 1998. The governor’s mansion, House, Senate and Cabinet were all controlled by Democrats when Slade took over the party. Republicans have been firmly in control since. Read more
Tackiest man in Fla: Will Charlie Crist start hocking portable fans to promote ‘fangate’? – It’s hard to believe that this slick-willy style politician, who has snake-charmed half of Florida (mostly Dems, of course), has successfully used his fan as a prop for his campaign. He must be so proud of himself. As a refresher, gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist insisted on using a hidden fan during last week’s debate with Florida Gov. Rick Scott, violated the rules, delayed the debate, and managed to spin it all to make Scott look bad. Conveniently, every liberal on the planet erased the famous Nixon/ Kennedy debate from history and acted as if a fan was insignificant and petty. Read more
City tells waterfront homeowners, we can build docks but you can’t – For more than 20 years, waterfront homeowners living along the city of Sanibel, on Florida’s San Carlos Bay, have been barred from building boating docks. It’s tough luck for homes not grandfathered in, as resale values in the gulf community — where boating is in part a way of life — are directly affected. It’s even tougher for owners who believe the reasoning for the ban doesn’t hold any water. So when the city government decided to build its own dock in the restricted area eight years ago, some residents started speaking up. Their stop could be the U.S. Supreme Court. Read more
