Obama White House press aides tried to delete an embarrassing “joke” about unpaid bills the president made during a speech in Chicago on Monday – but they were too late.
The joke was already out – and the embarrassment’s been around for years.
Speaking at a Democratic fundraiser (where else?) Monday evening, President Obama talked about seeing the old home he lived in before moving into the White House with his wife, two daughters, and the first mother-in-law.
“One of the nice things about being home is actually that it’s a little bit like a time capsule,” he said, according to a White House pool report cited by CNN.
“There’s still junk on my desk, including some unpaid bills … I think eventually they got paid — but they’re sort of stacked up. And messages, newspapers and all kinds of stuff.”
While it wouldn’t shock any American to learn that the president who’s racked up more debt than all his predecessors combined left unpaid bills behind him at home, the White House press office released a sanitized transcript of the speech that censored the “unpaid bills” lines out of existence.
In the official version, Obama says “”Michelle and I and the kids, we left so quickly that there’s still junk on my desk, including some — newspapers and all kinds of stuff.”
Even the MSM that helped put Obama in the White House and keep him there had to notice.
Official transcript of Obama fundraiser tonight omits his joke about unpaid bills on his desk in Chicago. @jeneps & I went back to the tape

And the Twitter pileup began …
Pres Obama tells fundraiser he’s still got unpaid bills on his desk at his Chicago home. May explain why his credit card was declined.

@markknoller Glad to know he’s as fiscally irresponsible in his private life as he is in his public one. #consistency

@DRUDGE_REPORT As if he could or would run his personal business any differently than he does the country. Same guy, same complacency.

What’s really amazing about the whole thing — basic dishonesty aside — is the sheer amateur-hour feel of the attempt to shove the president’s “joke” down the memory hole. If the “joke” had been allowed to pass, chances are most people would never have even noticed it.
But the Obama acolytes in the White House couldn’t let the unforced error go by without trying to erase it lest evil Republicans have some ammunition heading into the final days of the midterm campaign.
@DRUDGE_REPORT Presidential staff are professional whitewashers

@bradthor @whitehouse They say transparent, but they keep white washing everything.

@bradthor@whitehouse It’s now the White Wash House.

Like the American people — even the ones that voted for him — would be surprised to learn this is a a president who doesn’t give a tinker’s damn about the debts he’s leaving behind him?
Insignificant, but makes you wonder what else is being deleted from the official record of the president’s remarks. http://t.co/lD3dgdI6F0

Exactly.
As the old Washington truism goes, it’s not the quip, it’s the coverup.
