Every Halloween, parents worry about their kids being given tainted candy, but parents in Colorado have a whole new concern when it comes to the annual candy haul.

Marijuana-tainted treats.

In a public service announcement posted on their official Facebook page, the Denver Police Department are warning parents to watch for pot-tainted candy on Halloween, according to Fox News.

Recreational marijuana is legal in Colorado and marijuana-infused candies, cookies and brownies are but a few of the items now on the market in the state. Hospitals are already seeing an increase in the number of children accidentally ingesting marijuana, according to the Denver Post.

Parenting expert Erika Katz was on “Fox and Friends Weekend” on Sunday and offered parents a few tips for Halloween. As she explained, pot-tainted treats can cause children to get very sick and could even be lethal.

“You just don’t want them eating loose candy or going into someone’s home, sticking their hand in a bowl, especially a place like Colorado,” Katz said.

As for the urban legends of sharp objects being embedded in apples and candy being tainted with poison, for the most part these stories are myths.

According to Snopes: “Nearly all such cases turn out to be nothing: they’re pranks played by children on their parents, siblings, or friends; they’re false reports generated by attention-seeking children and adults.”
