While Vice President Joe Biden obsesses over the Koch brothers, his son is being dogged by another brand of “coke.”
Hunter Biden’s brief career as a public affairs officer in the Navy Reserves ended in February for reasons that are only now coming to light.
According to The Wall Street Journal, he was discharged after testing positive for cocaine.
Now 44 years old, Biden needed a waiver to join the Navy last year because of his age, and sources told The Journal he received a second waiver for a drug-related incident when he was younger.
On May 7, 2013, Biden was commissioned as an ensign and assigned to the Navy Public Affairs Support Element East in Norfolk, Va., according to The Journal. A month later, he tested positive for cocaine and was discharged in February.
“It was the honor of my life to serve in the U.S. Navy, and I deeply regret and am embarrassed that my actions led to my administrative discharge,” Biden said in a statement released by his attorney, according to The Journal. “I respect the Navy’s decision. With the love and support of my family, I’m moving forward.”
Navy personnel who fail a drug test are given either an “other than honorable” or “general” discharge. The Journal said it’s unclear which discharge Biden received.
The vice president’s office declined to comment, but the Navy issued a brief statement.
“Like other junior officers, the details of Ens. Biden’s discharge are not releasable due to the Privacy Act,” Commander Ryan Perry said.
Thanks to connections in high places, Biden has landed on his feet. He is now a managing partner at the investment firm, Rosemont Seneca Partners, and serves as chairman of World Food Program USA. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University.
