Conservative star shreds Obama’s hapless, nanny-state CDC: It’s overreaching, not underfunded

Conservative columnist Michelle Malkin has been a piercing voice for sanity since the dreamy days of Obama’s first election, but her column this week shredding the Centers for Disease Control is up there with her best.

Looking into baseless gripes of Democrats that it was Republican scrooges that kept the CDC from finding a vaccine for the Ebola virus, or somehow hindered its preparations for responding to a potential crisis, Malkin pointed out that the CDC’s budget is almost 200 percent bigger than it was in 2000.

In “The Centers for Everything But Disease Control,” she also notes that the Republican House approved more money for the CDC budget than the White House requested (neither amount ever got passed because of Harry Reid, and the vampiric Senate majority’s leader’s chokehold on the Senate.)

But most important, Malkin catalogs exactly how the CDC has strayed from the mission contained in its actual title: disease control.

Here, thanks to Malkin, are some of the “diseases” the Obama Era CDC is busying itself while the Ebola virus prods the nation’s defenses and CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden looks increasingly inept with each development in the story:

Motorcycle helmet use: “Last year, the meddling panel extended the agency’s reach … with a call to impose a federal universal motorcycle helmet law on the country. Is riding a Harley a disease? Why is this the CDC’s business?”

Playground equipment. “Apparently, there aren’t enough teachers, parents, local school districts, and county and state regulators to police the slides and seesaws. Why is this the CDC’s business?”

“Social norming” in the schools. “It’s the mother of all government values clarifications programs. So bad attitudes are now a disease. Again, I ask: Why is this the CDC’s business?”

Malkin’s column has gotten a lot of attention in conservative circles. Top-rated conservative radio host Mark Levin read excerpts on his Wednesday show, sarcastically predicting it was a story that would be picked up by every major news outlet.

He was joking, of course. Criticizing nanny state priorities like “social norming” isn’t a priority of the mainstream media.

That’s why Americans should be grateful for journalists like Malkin.
