Republican Rep. Steve Vaillancourt stuck his foot in his mouth this weekend when he blogged about Democrat Congresswoman Ann Kuster who is campaigning for another term against Republican challenger Marilinda Garcia.
“Let’s be honest. Does anyone not believe that Congressman Annie Kuster is as ugly as sin? And I hope I haven’t offended sin,” wrote Vaillancourt.
“How ugly is Annie Kuster? Again avert your eyes if you don’t want to hear it,” he said before saying “drag queens are more atrractive [sic] than Annie Kuster….not that there’s anything wrong with that.”
In an attempt to excuse his actions Vaillancourt claims his observations are relevant because he heard that a new survey showed “an attractive candidate can have as much as a seven to ten point advantage over a less attractive (or even an unattractive) candidate.”
Vaillancourt is no stranger to controversy as he was temporarily suspended from the House floor in May of 2012 for shouting “Sieg Heil” at Speaker, Bill O’Brien during a debate on a voter ID bill.
Republican men have been known to joke that conservative women are much more attractive than their Democrat counterparts, but those men aren’t usually in office.
Comments have drawn the ire of the Twitterverse.
