Being a liberal intellectual means being able to stretch the truth to fit just about any idea that comes into your head.
And music and culture critic Greil Marcus is as liberal as an intellectual can get. He proved it in an interview published Sunday by the lefty website Salon, arguing that the deaths of Trayvon Martin in Florida and Michael Brown in Missouri were really subconscious assassinations by aggrieved whites actually targeting President Obama.
Anyway, don’t let me go on like this. But, yeah, yeah. And when you look at the things … when you look at the murder of Trayvon Martin, when you look at the murder of Michael Brown, when you look at those situations, it’s not unrelated to Obama being president, but it’s more the way in which the country has reframed itself or rewritten itself since his election, with all kinds of people saying to themselves, maybe never putting it into words, just feeling it, “There’s a fucking n—er in the White House? Well fuck you, n—er, whoever you are.” And an inchoate loathing and hatred that seeks out its targets.
I’m not a psychiatrist, I haven’t sat down and interviewed George Zimmerman or the cop who shot Michael Brown, I don’t know what their motives are, I don’t know what kind of people they are, what kind of childhood traumas they have experienced. But I don’t think it’s nuts that in a certain way, when that cop killed Michael Brown, and when George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin, they were killing Barack Obama.
You don’t need to be a psychiatrist to know this is insane — even by the standards of liberal intellectuals.
George Zimmernan killed Trayvon Martin during a street fight all the evidence indicates was started when Martin physically attack Zimmerman because he didn’t like being followed.
In Ferguson, Mo., police Officer Darren Wilson shot Michael Brown to death in an incident that’s still being investigated by a grand jury but sounds more and more like a scuffle between a police officer and a street kid big enough and mean enough to have just robbed a convenience store by sheer physical force.
The only things the shootings have in common are the race of the men who died and how their deaths have been peverted by the left into a cause celebre adaptable enough to push any agenda.
In the United States, between 8,000 and 9,000 young black men are shot to death every year, overwhelmingly by other young, black men. What these thousands of shootings have in common is the race of the killer.
Is each one of those young, black gunmen assassinating the president, too?
Ask a liberal intellectual.
