Fla. Rep. Bill Hager lets his service speak for itself to defeat challenger

After serving Florida House District 89 for the past four years, state Rep. Bill Hager is anxious to continue representing the people he has called neighbors for more than 25 years.

bill hagerThe Republican legislator in the south Palm Beach County district 89 has a unique background of public and community service, along with a strong dose of business acumen. Hager’s resume boasts numerous prestigious positions, including math teacher, attorney, Iowa insurance commissioner, Boca Raton councilman and former CEO of one of the largest employers in the district, NCCI.

It all combines to educate and influence Hager in his pursuit of legislative priorities for the next term, including continued work on sober house regulation, job creation, beach conservation and environmental protection, he told BizPac Review.

Challenging Hager for the seat is political neophyte and Democrat David Silvers, president of Tekno Books.

Republicans have a slight leg up in the district, with 36 percent of registered voters to Democrats’ 34 percent, but the race could hinge on independent voters, who comprise 30 percent of the district.

Hager holds the fundraising advantage, with campaign contributions of $216,555 compared to Silvers’ $98,014 through Sept. 26. Silvers has also loaned his campaign $25,100.

Campaign endorsements have fallen along the usual party lines, with chambers of commerce and business organizations supporting Hager and Democratic-leaning unions lining up behind Silvers. Equality Florida and the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council have endorsed Hager.

Hager says his most notable ambition is to pass a bill he authored that would create an oversight process to regulate sober homes at the state level. The measure failed to pass the Legislature during the 2014 session.

“It passed the House unanimously, but not the Senate,” he said, noting that it is his top priority for the next session.

Hager believes his passion for his district makes him the best choice to continue to represent its residents.

“I have 25 years of working hard in this district, both in terms of charitable organizations and as an employer in the district,” he said. “I get it when it comes to fiscal responsibility, job creation, balanced budgets and human needs.”
